Why Every Child Needs a Feelings Journal (And How It Can Change Everything)

Ever ask your child how their day was and get the usual shrug or "fine"?? It’s frustrating when you know there’s more going on inside their little minds, but they don’t always have the words—or the comfort—to express it. That’s exactly why I created My Feelings, My Words—a guided journal designed for kids to open up in a way that feels natural, safe, and pressure-free. In a changing world, where kids can feel misunderstood, confused, and unsure how to communicate their feelings, having a dedicated space to express themselves is more important than ever.

Why a Feelings Journal?
As parents, we often think of journaling as an adult activity, but it can be just as valuable for kids. In fact, it’s one of the simplest ways to help kids build emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and resilience. Here’s why:

  • Encourages Expression: Kids don’t always know how to verbalize their emotions, but writing (or even drawing) gives them an outlet.
  • Reduces Anxiety & Stress: Getting thoughts onto paper helps process emotions in a healthy way, preventing bottled-up feelings from turning into bigger struggles.
  • Strengthens Parent-Child Communication: A guided journal with prompts makes it easier for kids to share their world with you—without feeling like they’re being interrogated.
  • Improves Problem-Solving Skills: Writing about challenges helps children reflect and find solutions instead of feeling stuck.

What Makes My Feelings, My Words Different?
There are plenty of journals out there, but this one was created with kids, for kids. The prompts aren’t just random questions—I worked on them with my own son to make sure they actually make sense from a child’s perspective. The goal? To create something that doesn’t feel like “homework” but instead feels like a personal space where kids can be honest, silly, or serious—whatever they need in the moment.

How to Use the Journal Effectively

  • No Pressure, No Rules: Let your child use it however they want—daily, weekly, or whenever they feel like it.
  • Create a Routine: Maybe it’s a 5-minute bedtime wind-down activity or a weekend check-in—my son and I like to do it while winding down for the night, and it’s been a great way to hear what’s really on his mind.
  • Respect Their Privacy: Not everything has to be shared, but if they do want to talk, listen without judgment.
  • Model the Habit: If you journal yourself, show them it’s a normal and healthy thing to do.
